Pro Team Report - Bream on Shad's
Dave Butfield chases bream with the outperforming Sebile Flatt Shad & Spin Shad

On one of my recent trips away I landed in a little place called St. Georges Basin on the NSW South Coast. I hooked up with Greg Reid to chase bream. I had fished this area before but only managed to land legal sized bream so hopefully this time I could land some bigger bream.

I was told before I came to the South Coast make sure I bring some Blades as they are the only thing that the bream are biting on. I was thinking only Blades surely they'll take a Sebile lure as I have caught bream on the Flatt Shad before. So from that I took with me a range of different Sebile lures from the Flatt Shad to a great little lure called a Spin Shad.

We finally made it on the water and I was ready to cast my first lure with the Sebile Flatt Shad 42 sinking. My first retrieve came up trumps then I cast the Flatt Shad out again for its second time and let it sink a little longer so it was hitting the bottom. I slowly worked the lures back with a 3 second pause then lifted the rod tip again and this time a hungry bream grabbed my lure. Once I worked out the retrieve style within 5 casts I had two bream over the 35cm mark.

As we started to fish in deeper waters around 8m, I thought a lure change was in order as I needed to get to the bottom quicker. The wind started to blow which made our drift quicker. I was thinking which lure would work best as I rumbled around in my lure box to see which Sebile lure I could use this time. I need a lure that had a quick sink rate and a small baitfish profile.

The first lure that came to mind was the Sebile Spin Shad 00. This lure has a quick sink rate which will get me to the bottom of 8metres of water with no problems. This lure looks like a small baitfish which was exactly what I was after. I have used this lure a number of times on salmon and bonito with great success when these species are feeding on small white bait. I thought why wouldn't this work on bream. I just need to work out how to work the Spin Shad which would incense the bream.

On my first cast I worked the lure with a slow constant wind. This technique didn't attract the bream, then the next cast I tried the same technique as I used with the Flatt Shad, a rip off the bottom with a slightly longer pause. As I lifted the rod tip after the pause the line tighten and I was on to a great bream. After an awesome fight I landed a 38cm bream on a Sebile Spin Shad and I was over the moon with the result.
I continued this technique over and over again. Greg who was fishing with me was using a Blade and over the 4 hours I landed 12 bream to his 3 bream. Greg was amazed at how this little wonder lure worked and insisted that I leave him a range of Spin Shads before I head back.

This amazing little lure ended up being a hot little bream lure and is definitely a must have for any avid bream fisherman.
